August Enrichment: Canine Castaway

Why enrichment? Enrichment gives dogs an outlet for their natural instincts (sniffing, searching, solving) and works their brain, not just their legs. A few minutes of sniff-and-search or puzzle work takes real effort, so dogs go home happily tired: body exercised, brain satisfied, confidence a little bigger. How our enrichment works

In August 2026, Metro Animals daycare dogs in Fort Worth and Plano started Canine Castaway, a four-week island-themed enrichment adventure with scent work, treat searches on a sandy shoreline, a dark scent cave and step-over balance obstacles.

Last month our Barksville crew flew off to visit the Presidog at the Woofhouse. The mission was a success, and everyone boarded the flight home with tails wagging. Then came a low rumble beneath the cabin, a strange scraping sound overhead… and the plane lost its wings.

Moments later the crew splashed down into the ocean. Every dog made it safely through the storm, but now they were stranded somewhere far from home. That is where Canine Castaway began: from August 1, daycare guests at Metro Animals in Fort Worth and Plano could join the rescue mission.

All month long, the adventure meant a story that unfolded week by week, fresh enrichment challenges every week, plenty of scent work and natural-instinct play, puzzles that build confidence, and friendships made through play and teamwork.

What the month holds

  • Week 1: They’ve Been Found! The castaways wash ashore and meet a tribe of friendly island dogs.
  • Week 2: Learning the Ways of the Island. The beach becomes a giant snuffle mat and the jungle an obstacle course.
  • Week 3: The Survival Trials. Every explorer proves what they have learned before the raft home can be built.
  • Week 4: Homeward Bound. A storm, a broken raft and one last rescue.

Week 1: They’ve Been Found!

Good news from the island: the castaways survived. After drifting through rough seas, the crew washed ashore on a beautiful tropical island, gathered together and settled in to wait for rescue. Then the jungle began to rustle. One dog stepped onto the beach, then another, until dozens of island dogs surrounded the group. Their leader approached and, in a calm voice, asked how the tribe could help the weary travelers. Instead of danger, our crew had found friends.

The first lessons of island life? Wild Boar Tracking, Find the Fruit, and a Hound Huddle with story time.

At daycare, the week 1 enrichment menu looked like this:

  • Shoreline Scatter Search: noses down to find treats hidden along the shoreline.
  • The Scent Cave Shelter Check: exploring a darkened “cave” using only the sense of smell.
  • Where’s Wilson?! Following a scent trail through the jungle to track down Wilson the volleyball.
  • Follow My Movement: choosing to stay with a handler as they move through the space, building trust.
  • The Driftwood Step-Over: stepping carefully over driftwood-style obstacles for balance and body awareness.

The castaways dove right in. In Plano, island explorers Jesse and Jamie set out on a shoreline scatter search, and Jesse was all smiles after diving into her washed-up finds. In Fort Worth, the crew gathered resources and explored the sandy shoreline: Bucky joined the search party and soaked up the new island textures and scents, Hank found some things washed ashore, Felix showed off his island attire and Divot went on the hunt for supplies.
