January Enrichment: The Barksville Wild West Gold Rush
Why enrichment? Enrichment gives dogs an outlet for their natural instincts (sniffing, searching, solving) and works their brain, not just their legs. A few minutes of sniff-and-search or puzzle work takes real effort, so dogs go home happily tired: body exercised, brain satisfied, confidence a little bigger. How our enrichment works
In January 2026, Metro Animals daycare dogs in Fort Worth and Plano started the Barksville Wild West Gold Rush, a four-week enrichment adventure of scent trails, digging for gold, treat-finding puzzle pots and calm snack foraging.
We welcomed the new year with a whole new month of enrichment: Barksville became part of the Wild West. In the Barksville Wild West Gold Rush, the pups panned for gold, visited the saloon and held meetings at high noon, and the Wild West enrichment ran in Fort Worth and Plano alike.
The story
It started out like any other day in Barksville. The dogs were taking turns on a scent trail, noses down on the dusty ground, when one pup suddenly froze, tilted his head and began digging as fast as his paws would go. Up came something shiny. It wasn’t a buried tennis ball or a leftover treat. It was gold.
Soon the whole town was paw-deep in dirt and excitement. The staff set up extra digging stations, there was talk of a boomtown rising, and every dog in Barksville had gone digging mad. But Barksville wasn’t the only one after the treasure. Shadow and his Bone-faced Bandits were on the trail too, so the town swore in a crew of new sheriffs to find the gold first.

The month ahead
- Week 1: Gold Fever Hits Barksville — the big strike, the Salty Saloon and the scents of the frontier.
- Week 2: Trouble Rides Into Town — the bandits make their move and the sheriffs pick up the trail.
- Week 3 — the sheriffs cook up a plan and pan for every last bit of gold to make it work.
- Week 4 — the fool’s gold swap, and the brave sheriff pups save the town.
Week 1: Gold Fever Hits Barksville
In week one, Barksville spots like the Salty Saloon, the Howlin’ Post, the Barksville Bank and the Sheriff’s Office gave the pups plenty to explore. Through safe, staff-led play, they problem-solved and tried out new roles as miners, barkeeps and deputies.

- Salty Saloon Snack Bar — snack time became a calm foraging game, with pups using their sense of smell to find the treats. Super rewarding, nice and relaxed, and it encourages slower eating.
- Scent of the Frontier — old leather boots, burned wood, pine oil and rose petals to explore, building curiosity and confidence.
- Prospector’s Puzzle Pots — like true prospectors, dogs searched for hidden “gold” using their brains and their noses.
- Saloon Dance Shuffle — a lighthearted one-on-one “dance” with their handler to build connection and trust.
- Boomtown Boardwalk — a calm stroll across Barksville’s boardwalk for balance and body awareness.
Over at the Barksville Dance Hall, the pups danced, wiggled and cuddled with their pack leaders to celebrate all the town’s hard work. Out in the Badlands, between the cactus and the tumbleweeds, they explored multiple levels and textures while keeping their eyes on the prize.
New sheriffs reported for duty, too: Sheriff Iggy, looking very spiffy in his uniform; Sheriff Erie, here to keep Barksville safe from bandits; and Sheriff Hank, ready for adventure.
